“Souls” (2005)
The short film “Souls” was inspired by the full length screen play “Soul Searching” written by Zoë Naomi Bridgeman. The film “Souls” is a complete film within it’s own right, and not a trailer for the feature film “Soul Searching.” That being said, “Souls” was intended as a calling card for Joshua Generation Films, drawing attention to both the company and the upcoming feature.
“Souls” takes place during both present day and pre-Emancipation era (1860). It centers around the story of Lola (a beautiful, driven singer with a troubled past), sharing a candid dinner conversation about the hardships in her life that made her the kind of woman she is today. Meanwhile the other guests are so effected by her tale that they begin to reflect on there own traumatic pasts. The story is further propelled by the Blood Memory sequences (slave scenes) that illustrate that life repeats its lessons until we learn from them. True freedom is not only physical freedom, but spiritual, and emotional liberation as well.
The future impact of “Souls” is immeasurable because it has already impacted the lives of those who have crossed its path. “Souls” will inspire all thoughts who see it, allowing one to reflect on their own connections to the past, present and the future. Lastly, we believe “Souls” will create more interest and anticipation for the already awaited feature film “Soul Searching”.
